Plant Based Oils

In recent years, plant oils and their derivatives have gained popularity due to their renewable nature, worldwide availability, reasonable price and numerous application possibilities. In the beauty industry, botanical oils are the core of the clean beauty market because of their unusual adaptability, effectively delivering moisture, vitamins and antioxidants to your face, body and hair. Some plant based oils also have antimicrobial and inflammation fighting properties, while others stimulate cell turnover.  Plant oils have vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and other micronutrients that enable your body to produce enzymes, hormones and other substances essential for proper growth and development. Many naturally serve multiple uses, though the industry has expanded to include multipurpose blends with both skincare and aromatherapy benefits.
While the majority of plant based oils on the market today have been processed for topical use and consumption, they are still much better than their synthetic, chemical based counterparts. The best plant based oils are organic, unrefined, virgin or extra-virgin because they are processed as close to the source as possible. Here are a couple you may be familiar with:
Olive oil – Almost everyone has a bottle of olive oil in their pantry. It’s good for drizzling over veggies, bread or fresh salads because it is high in monounsaturated fats and vitamins A and E. As a skincare product, this kitchen staple has been used since ancient times because it is also packed with anti-aging antioxidants and hydrating squalene.
Avocado oil – Just like the fruit it comes from, avocado oil is high in monounsaturated fatty acids, which replace saturated fats without increasing caloric intake. These fatty acids, like oleic acid and the abundant vitamins, mean that avocado oil is very good at hydrating and softening skin. It has also been recommended as a treatment for acne, blackheads, eczema and other types of skin inflammation.

Lemon Oil - Lemon oil is best known for it’s ability to cleanse toxins from any part of the body and is widely used to stimulate lymph drainage, to rejuvenate energy, purify skin and act as a bug repellant.  It comes from the cold-pressing the lemon peel and not the inner fruit.  The peel is the most nutrient dense portion of the lemon in terms of fat soluble phytonutrients.
Plant-based oils have been used in the kitchen for years, but ingesting them through food isn’t the only way to benefit from their natural properties. The versatility of plant-based oils alone makes them a better option than over-processed synthetic oils; however, many plant-based oils also contain natural elements that help your skin, hair and body heal. Remember to only use products that contain the best, organic plant oils, like Edye’s Naturals, to help you become the best you.
