How Does Skin Absorption Impact Skincare?

Did you know that your skin is the largest organ in your body?  Since your skin is porous, it absorbs whatever is put on it.  One study in the American Journal of Public Health looked at the skin’s absorption rate of chemicals found in drinking water; the results showed that on average, people’s skin absorbed 64% of the total contaminant dosage.  Certain areas of the body, including the face and underarms, are believed to be even more permeable and therefore have greater absorption.

With this knowledge in mind, it’s clear that skincare can either be like food for your skin, or toxic to your body.  Therefore, what you put on your skin is just as significant as what you put in your body when it comes to your health.

Chances are that you aren’t thinking about chemicals entering your bloodstream when you are applying products such as moisturizers, deodorants, facial creams, or other skincare products.  Unfortunately, conventional skincare products contain toxic chemicals, colors, and fragrances, which make their way into your body when they are applied externally on your skin.  Since these products are so widely available, they might not feel dangerous, yet they do more harm than good.  Not only do these chemicals not offer healthful benefits, many of them are also considered carcinogenic and are a source of allergies and irritations.

In order to protect your skin and overall health, it is important to be mindful of which skincare products you choose to use.  Choosing organic products will help cut down on your toxic load and will also truly nourish your skin from the outside in. At Edye’s Naturals we are transparent about what ingredients we use and why we use them.  Edye’s Naturals products are all botanically based, offering essential vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants to help moisturize and repair your skin.  Take a look at our ingredients page to read more about each thoughtfully selected ingredient and how it can support your skin health.  Make sure that your skin is absorbing healthful ingredients, and that you aren’t exposing yourself to harmful ingredients.
